Colleen has conducted research in universities in Australia, UK and US since completing a doctorate in psychology at The University of Adelaide. As a research fellow of the National Research Institute for Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine in 1987 she was awarded a Gerontological Society of America postdoctoral summer fellowship to investigate methods of assessing quality of care in residential aged care. In 1997 she stopped full time paid work to become primary carer of her disabled elderly mother and young son. In 2006 she was awarded an Alzheimer's Australia Research Pty Ltd Travelling Scholarship to study consumer involvement in dementia care research, policy and evaluation in the U.K. and U.S.
Since 1990 she has attracted over $2.3 million in research grants and tenders from the Sandoz Foundation, Australian Department of Health and Ageing, American Association of Retired Persons, Alzheimer's Australia, Australian Nursing Federation Victoria and Department of Human Services Victoria. She was co-founder of the Australian Psychological Society’s Psychologists in Ageing Special Interest Group. She has written and published over 65 academic and technical papers in the area of aged care. As well as part-time principal research fellow at NARI, she is concurrently part-time senior research fellow at the Centre for Health Policy, Programs and Economics at The University of Melbourne.
