Dr Liz believes you need to 'use it or lose it'. This means using the wisest combination of physical, mental and social strategies for healthy ageing. She has committed her life and award-winning scholarship to ensuring people know how to maintain their independence. Even her mum listens to her advice!
Dr Liz is passionately committed to bringing research to running shoes. She has developed innovative exercise programs in North America and Australia. A marathoner and avid cyclist, she created her first seniors’ fitness program in 1992. She so enjoyed working with seniors that she made their health her life's work.
An award winning scholar, Dr Liz earned her PhD from the School of Human Movement Studies at The University of Queensland. She was awarded three prestigious scholarships and her thesis was selected for the Dean’s Commendation List for Outstanding PhD in 2007. Dr Liz's work at the master’s level won her awards at three national program evaluation competitions in Canada. Before joining NARI, she was the Education Coordinator at the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging. She led the national delivery of leadership courses that trained fitness instructors, diversional therapists and home support workers, rain, shine or snow.
Dr Liz's fifteen years of activity and ageing expertise includes: how to stay healthy and independent, training leaders of physical activity programs for older people and physical activity measurement. She designs and evaluates physical activity programs across the continuum of care from community based to residential aged care. Her publications have appeared in national and international journals, and she has been interviewed on ABC Melbourne and appeared on Channel 9 News.
