Dr. Jean Tinney
BA Dip Ed Dip TEFLA MAppl Ling PhD

Jean Tinney, BA Dip Ed DIP TEFLA MAppl Ling PhD, completed a BA in English and History and a Diploma of Education at the University of Melbourne before beginning an extended period of teaching and training in Australia and a number of European countries. She specialised in teaching English for Specific purposes in the tertiary education sector, in particular in programs for overseas-qualified health professionals. Her interest in cross-cultural communication and communication in the health professions led her to complete a Masters of Applied Linguistics at the University of Melbourne in 1996. This included a minor study of cross-cultural perceptions of staff-resident communication in a Sydney residential aged care facility. She was also involved from 1992 until 2006 in testing and materials development for the Overseas English Test for health professionals.

Jean joined NARI in 2006 shortly after completing her PhD through the Centre for Health and Society at the University of Melbourne. Her thesis, based on an eight-month period of ethnographic fieldwork in two aged care facilities, explored the role of communication in sustaining sense of self and wellbeing in residents in aged care. Her research interests include communication in health care settings, staff recruitment and retention, person-centred care and older age mental health.
